Stafford Lake Field Trip
The ecological problems of the stream at Stafford Lake are the effects of erosion from the stream’s downward flow. Because of this, the water needs to oxidized in Stafford Lake through treatments.
The Marin County Parks project is addressing these problems by using stream protection. This works by restoring the streams and stabilizing and installing gently sloping stream banks. They also are using soil bioengineering to restore the streams. Using plant materials to grow into the soil and bind particles together reduces erosion.
On the field trip, we worked on the sheet mulching part of the restoration. We used layers of hay, cardboard, and mulch to keep weeds and otheer invasive plant species from taking over the land around the lake.
Our work was part of an Integrated Pest Management approach because we used natural materials to keep unwanted pests from distrubing the environment around Stafford.
I really liked that on this field trip we were directly helping our community by restoring areas where our drinking water is kept. I found that it is important to volunteer because there are many ways that I benefit in my life from people that do volunteer work and it is important that I give back as well to have other people in our community benefit.
